My husband’s family used to make a large batch of homemade spaghetti sauce once a year. Since they canned it, all of us could enjoy delicious homemade sauce all year around. Although it was delicious, it needed a lot of work and time – too much of work. It would take about a whole day to make it. I have good memories helping my mother-in-law make the spaghetti sauce, but for the past several years, we stopped making it. I’ve been craving that tasty sauce. My husband always wanted to make shortcut version of it, which still tastes like the secret family recipe. We tried different methods over the years, each time getting closer to the goal. Finally, I can share a successful recipe to share with you. 🙂 My husband thinks that this easy version of spaghetti sauce is almost the same as the original. Yay!!! 👏😄 For this recipe, I’m going to use an electric pressure cooker as a key method to save my time and effort. I am very excited to show you how to make this delicious homemade spaghetti sauce in an hour. 🙂 I also can not wait for my in-laws to try it and tell me what they think about it. lol

Video Instructions
Main Ingredients:
- 1 Can Crushed Tomatoes or Tomato Puree (28 oz)
- 1 Can Tomato Paste (4 oz)
- 2 Cups Sweet Peppers
- 1 Cup Onion
- ¼ Cup Water
- ¼ Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 4 Cloves Garlic
- 1 Tbsp Banana Pepper or Hot Pepper (Optional)
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 Tbsp Salt
- 1 tsp Dried Oregano
- ½ tsp Dried Sweet Basil
Directions
Chop 2 cups worth of sweet peppers, 1 cup worth of an onion, and 1 Tbsp worth of banana pepper (or hot pepper) into bite-sized chunks. We will also need 4 cloves of garlic. We will blend them together with some other spices later.
Prepare the seasoning ingredients: 1 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp salt, 1 tsp dried oregano, and ½ tsp dried sweet basil.
Add all the chopped vegetable ingredients and seasoning ingredients in a blender. And then pour about ¼ cup of water in it. The water helps the ingredients blend better.
Turn the blender on and blend the ingredients for 30 seconds on high. This mixture will go into the spaghetti sauce to give it great flavor later.
Prepare 1 can (28 oz) of crushed tomato and 1 can (6 oz) of tomato paste. You can also use a can of tomato puree instead of a can of crushed tomato, but personally I prefer the crushed tomato.
For the original recipe, you had to peel the skin of all the tomatoes, chop, and then blend them before cooking. Since fresh tomatoes contain a lot of water, it took a long~~~ time to boil the tomato sauce. So, it was my husband’s genius idea to use canned crushed tomatoes along with tomato paste to shorten the process.
For the best taste, ensure that your cans of tomatoes do not have citric acid or any other preservatives in them. So, if you can find them, please use cans that contain only tomatoes.
The tomato paste eliminates the need to boil down the sauce to thicken it. If we only use crushed tomatoes, it doesn’t get the nice thick spaghetti sauce texture and the flavor is not quite right.
Again, get a tomato paste without citric acid or other preservatives. The tomato itself is already sour enough for good spaghetti sauce. This is a 6 oz can, but I will only use 4 oz of it.
Put the crushed tomato and the paste in the inner pot of your electric pressure cooker. Mix it well so that the tomato paste gets blended with the crushed tomatoes.
Pour the blended vegetables and seasonings into the tomato sauce. Mix everything together.
Finally, pour ¼ cup of extra virgin olive oil into it and mix it one more time.
Put the inner pot into the pressure cooker. I will use a Bestek electric pressure cooker for this recipe. It is the same one that I used for making my Korean sauna eggs in my last video. I used the “Stew” function and it took about 45 minutes to cook my spaghetti sauce.
45 minutes later, release the pressure and open it. You will have a very delicious homemade spaghetti sauce.
As always, I like homemade food because you can save some money, you can control the ingredients for better health, and more importantly, it tastes delicious with the secret ingredient of LOVE. 💕 I highly recommend you to try my homemade spaghetti sauce recipe someday and let me know what you think. Bestek was gracious enough to supply the electric pressure cooker used in this video. If you are interested in it, please check the link in the description box. Hi, thank you for the recipe. Can I use tomato sauce instead of the crushed/puree tomatoes?
Aeri Lee says
hi Lina,
Well.. tomato sauce has smoother texture than crushed tomatoes.. so you might have to change the ratio for this recipe.. like increase tomato paste amount.. I didn’t try it with tomato sauce..but it shouldn’t be too much different from using crushed tomatoes… not the flavor..but the texture.. I just question little bit.. If you do have a chance to try it with crushed tomatoes.. I want you to try it too.. please let me know if you try it.
