Today, I want to introduce a sandwich recipe that is very hot right now in Korea. It is called an Ingigayo sandwich in Korean. Ingigayo is the name of an SBSmusic program. Kpop singers eat this special sandwich while they are preparing for their performance in SBS broadcast stations. I heard that you can only buy it there. Kpop stars shared this sandwich on their social media and it became very popular. I thought you might be interested in trying this unique sandwich like me, so I made a version of it. Let’s get started.
Yield: 2 Sandwiches
Short Korean Lesson
- InGi (인기) = Popularity
- GaSu (가수) = Singer
Video Instructions
Main Ingredients:
- 8 Slices of White Bread
- 2 Tbsp Strawberry Jam
Cabbage Salad Ingredients:
- 1 Cup White Cabbage
- 2 Tbsp Mayonnaise
- 2 Tbsp Onion
- 2 Tbsp Sweet and Sour Pickles
- ½ tsp Yellow Mustard
- 2 Pinches Salt
Potato Salad Ingredients:
- 1 Cup Boiled Potatoes
- 2 Hardboiled Eggs
- ¼ Cup Crab Sticks
- ¼ Cup Mayonnaise
- ⅛ tsp Salt
Directions
For this sandwich, we need to make two fillings. First, we will make potato and egg salad. I already prepared 2 medium sized boiled potatoes, 2 hard boiled eggs, and ¼ cup worth of crab sticks.
Chop the 3 ingredients into little pieces.
Put the potato, egg, and the crab sticks into a mixing bowl. Then, add ¼ cup of mayonnaise and ⅛ tsp of salt.
Mix everything well. This tastes so good that it can be tempting to eat it all now without finishing this recipe!
But, let’s continue. Next, let’s make some cabbage salad. The original version of this sandwich has a bland flavor with just the cabbage, mayonnaise, and salt. So, I added some other ingredients to make it more flavorful. I will share both recipes, so you can choose one to try.
Chop 1 cup worth of white cabbage into little pieces. For my version, also prepare 2 Tbsp of finely chopped onion and 2 Tbsp of sweet and sour pickles. These additions make the cabbage salad delicious enough to eat it like coleslaw.
For the original version, simply mix the cabbage with 2 Tbsp of mayonnaise and 2 pinches of salt.
You can use this orginal version of the cabbage salad for your sandwich.
However, if you want to try my version of it, add the chopped onion, pickles, and 1⁄2 tsp of yellow mustard to the original version of it. Mix everything together. We are dong make the fillings, so let’s make the sandwich.
We need 4 slices of bread. I tried to find thicker and bigger sandwich bread, as one might find in Korea, and this was the closest one I could find. I will trim the edges of the bread off for a better look and flavor with my bread knife. Of course, if you want, you can just eat the whole thing.
This recipe makes 2 sandwiches so you can divide the salad in half.
Depending on your bread size, you might be able to make more than 2 sandwiches.
Anyway, place a slice of bread on a plate and put the cabbage salad on it. Spread it out evenly.
Cover the cabbage salad with another slice of bread. It looks like we just made one sandwich, but we’re not done yet.
Get another slice of bread and put the potato and egg salad on it. In the same way, spread it out evenly.
And then cover it with another slice of bread. You can see that I used a generous amount of filling. Now, we will stack up these 2 sandwiches to make one big sandwich.
Therefore, on the top surface of the cabbage sandwich, spread about ½ Tbsp to 1 Tbsp of strawberry jam evenly. It might be a culture shock to see this flavor combination, but once you try it, you will see why it’s so popular in Korea especially with your favorite k-pop stars. lol The sweetness of the jam boasts the flavor of the sandwich, making it interestingly delicious.
Put the potato and egg salad sandwich on top of strawberry jam. Finally cut the sandwich diagonally.
It looks pretty and tasty. You can eat it right away, but you can also wrap it with plastic wrap and put it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. It will taste even better then. Anyway, I cannot wait that long today, so I will just eat it. lol It has both a soft and crunchy texture, along with a savory flavor. I love it~~~ I hope you can try it someday too.
