Video Instructions
Main Ingredients:
- 1 Cup Cooked Short Grain Rice
- 8 Mini Hotdogs
- 1 Sheet Dried Laver for Kimbap or Sushi
- 16 Thin Strips (2 Inch Long) Green Leafy Lettuce
- 8 Thin Strips (1¾ Inch Long) Red Sweet Pepper
- 8 Thin Strips (1¾ Inch Long) Yellow Sweet Pepper
- Extra Sesame Oil
Rice Ingredients:
- 1 Cup Cooked Short Grain Rice
- 2 Pinches Salt
- ½ tsp Sesame Oil
- ½ tsp Sesame Seeds
Directions
Start by gathering 8 mini hotdogs of your choice.
For the other vegetable ingredients, you’ll need green leafy lettuce, red sweet pepper, and yellow sweet pepper.
Cut the curly part of the lettuce into 2-inch-long but thin strips, totaling 16 pieces. Cut both the red and yellow sweet peppers into 1¾-inch-long strips (8 pieces each). It’s important to slice them thinly.
In a pot of boiling water, cook the hotdogs for about a minute on medium-high heat. This will help reduce some of the saltiness and ensure they are clean.
Cut a small section from the center of each hotdog, not all the way through, just the top part, creating a space to insert the vegetable ingredients later.
Let’s season the cooked short-grain rice.
Mix all the rice ingredients, including 1 cup of short-grain rice, 2 pinches of salt, ½ tsp sesame oil, and ½ tsp sesame seeds.
Assemble each piece of Hotdog Kimbap as follows: Layer one piece of lettuce, 1 red sweet pepper strip, 1 yellow sweet pepper strip, and then another piece of lettuce on top. Place these layers in the center of the hotdog you’ve cut earlier.
If it’s challenging to do this, you can use a toothpick to arrange the ingredients inside. Repeat this process for the remaining hotdogs to create miniature hotdogs to be placed in the kimbap.
To prepare the kimbap, place a sheet of dried laver for kimbap or sushi on a clean surface with the rough side up (the other side is shiny).
Spread the prepared cooked rice evenly over about ⅔ of the laver’s surface. Put a small amount of rice pieces on the edge of the laver to help seal the kimbap later.
Gently roll the kimbap, creating an oval shape for a size large enough to enclose the hotdogs made earlier.
Cut the rolled kimbap into 1-inch-thick pieces. Then, place each piece on the cutting board and remove the rice from the center, creating enough space to insert the hotdog. A toothpick or a small spoon may be useful for this step.
Finally, insert the hotdog pieces into the center of each kimbap piece. Your Hotdog Kimbap is now ready to enjoy!
And there you have it, your playful and delightful Hotdog Kimbap creation is ready to be devoured. Whether you’re serving these at a picnic, as a snack, or at a special gathering, be prepared for smiles and compliments. Enjoy these uniquely charming treats and share the joy of this creative Korean fusion dish with friends and family.
