My friends and I really like this dish. I’ve made it twice already … the first time I used too much soy sauce and it was too salty 🙁
I have seen another fried tofu banchan in the Korean supermarkets (pre-made) but it doesn’t have red pepper paste but more red pepper powder. Is that the same?
Aeri says
Hi, crzycpl
wow.. you already tried twice ??? Thank you !!! hehe.. the one I posted doesn’t have red pepper paste either.. I don’t know exactly what you saw..but I guess…it’s similar with mine.. just have more red pepper powder in it ?? ^^ maybe not..hehe

when i was still a kid, i went to this korean bbq restaurant which served a very flavourable tasty tofu side dish. it was dry without sauce or chilli. it’s just in its tofu color, which is white. will you teach me how to make it please? i really miss this side dish alot, thanks alot!!!
Aeri says
Hi, chen
I tried to guess what you were talking about…but sorry..I can’t guess what you want…. How it looks like.. (color..or ingredients…) .. how it tastes like… ?? thanks !!!!
Chris says
The sauce is delicious! It tastes good with other things too! I even put them on dumplings earlier today… Thank you. 🙂
Aeri says
Hi, Chris
Haha… exactly.. you are right.. the sauce is good for other things.. like.. on top of fried fish… (just salted fish..and fry it on the pan with oil.. ) or… boiled cabbage… wrap the cabbage with this sauce and rice.. yum~~~ hehe..thanks 🙂
chen says
Thanks, Aeri, the tofu looks exactly like the one you made here. in square, in its tofu color, ie white, but without sauce or chilli. but they tasted full of flavour, may be they were boiled in soup or broth before serving?! i can’t tell as it’s soooo many years ago. thank you!
Aeri says
Hi, chen
Oops~~~ still no clue @,@ All I can think is.. they served the steamed tofu with fried kimchi and pork ??? we have that kind of food… sorry for poor answer. 😥

Just wondering, how is this dish differently made from 두부조림? can i just use the same sauce?
Aeri Lee says
Hi Jamie,
Nice to meet you !!!
aha.. 두부조림.. almost similar sauce..but can be a little different too.. the 두부조림 will have some broth for cooking..and.. usually it will not have hot pepper powder.. I will post it someday. thanks 🙂

This was the first ‘korean’ recipe I ever tried and it was great. I was a bit afraid it would be too spicy for me as I can’t really andle spicy food well, but this was perfect. And, I think I may have convinced some of my family members that Tofu isn’t a bad thing! Thank you for all your great recipes and hints!
Joshua Sung Hwan Jun says
Hi Mrs. Aeri Lee,
I’ll try to make pan fried tofu in spicy sauce (the one that Maangchi called it)
1. Drain the tofu out of the box and then rinse it once.
2. Dry it with a paper towel but if it’s still wet, check it with a paper towel and dry it off
3. Divide the tofu in half and cut it into finger (pointy) sized pieces and then put it in the big plate so leave it while it’s drying
4. Prepare the sauce ingredients for pan fried tofu with spicy sauce.
a. two teaspoons of hot pepper powder, sugar and sesame oil
b. two tablespoons of soy sauce
c. one tablespoon of minced garlic
d. two teaspoons of sesame seeds
Tip: two chopped green onions are included (Maangchi method)
e. mix them together until it’ll turn it into the liquid texture
5. Add the oil in a pan and put it into medium or medium high heat to make it easier to turn them into golden brown
6. Turn over each side for seven minutes until they become golden brown
7. Turn off the heat and let it cool off but after that transfer it into a plate
8. Spoon over the sauce evenly and then bon appetit.
Have a great blessed day,
Joshua Sung Hwan Jun

I don’t know why it took me so long to search for this recipe, but I’m so grateful to Aeri for it! It’s not complicated at all and it’s truly one of the best online recipes I’ve tried. Very, very good! I’ve used this sauce on eggplant and zucchini–delicious, plus I’m eating more vegetables! I can adjust the ingredients, such as adding a little fish sauce and ginger, or make it as written and it comes out with the best flavor every time. And Aeri’s instructions are excellent.
Aeri Lee says
hi Pam,
