MaeUn OJingEo BokkEum (매운 오징어 볶음) is a spicy fried squid dish. This can be used as both a side dish or as a main dish. As a main dish, you put it on top of your rice, or thin boiled noodles. Then mix the fried squid with rice or noodles and eat. Sometimes you can eat it with boiled bean sprouts (KongNaMul) instead of noodles. If you really like spicy food, this recipe might not be that spicy for you, so add more red pepper paste and red pepper powder.
Yield: 2 Servings
Short Korean Lesson
- MaeWun (매운) = Spicy
- Dan (단) = Sweet
Video Instructions
Main Ingredients
- 1 Large Squid (or 2 Small Squids)
- ½ Onion
- ⅓ Carrot
- 2 Green Onions
- 1 Green Hot Pepper
- 1 Red Hot Pepper
Sauce Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp Red Pepper Paste
- 1 Tbsp Red Pepper Powder
- 1½ Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1½ Tbsp Sugar
- 2 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 1 Tbsp Cooking Wine
- 1 tsp Sesame Oil
- ½ tsp Sesame Seeds
- 1 or 2 Pinches Black Pepper Powder
Directions
To prepare the squid, remove the guts and clean it, or just buy a squid that was already cleaned like I did. 😉 Cut the squid into bite sized pieces. (1 inch)
Cut half of an onion into half-inch pieces. Cut ⅓ of a carrot diagonally. Cut 2 green onions and 2 hot peppers into 1 inch pieces.
Combine the squid, onion, carrot, and half of the chopped green onions, saving the rest of the green onions for later. Add 2 Tbsp of red pepper paste, 1 Tbsp of red pepper powder, 1½ Tbsp of soy sauce, 1½ Tbsp of sugar, 2 Tbsp of minced garlic, 1 Tbsp of cooking wine, 1 tsp of sesame oil, ½ tsp of sesame seeds, and 1 or 2 pinches of black pepper powder.
Mix all of the ingredients together. Cover it with plastic wrap and keep it in the refrigerator at least for 30 minutes before you cook it.
Once the pan is heated, pour the marinated squid into the pan.
When the squid is completely cooked, add hot peppers and the rest of the chopped green onions. Fry one more minute and turn off the heat.
Sprinkle some sesame seeds on top to serve. Enjoy! 😀

Hi Aeri,
i ate this spicy octopus and noodle in seoul. It was delicious. Recently my son came back from Seoul and he bought 2kg of dried sliced octopus. Can i use this in your recipe? Would the result be the same?
Also for the noodles, which type would you recommend? TKS!
Aeri Lee says
hi LaiPeng,
I’m sure that you are so happy with your son now. 🙂 Aha, the soup will need fresh or frozen octopus … not dried ones. You can use the dried octopus.. to eat as plain it is… or can make side dish with it. I recommend this recipe for it better than this spicy squid bokkeum…
