Soybean sprout rice, called kongnamul bap (콩나물밥) in Korean, is a delicious and unique one dish meal. When you make the rice, you cook some marinated meat and bean sprouts together, and then eat it with a special sauce. For this recipe, I used my rice cooker; however, you can also cook the rice on the stove. My husband tried this Korean dish for the first time today and gave an A rating. 🙂 I hope that you try this easy and tasty meal someday for your family.

Video Instructions
Main Ingredients
- 6 Cups Soybean Sprouts (16 oz)
- 2 Cups Uncooked Short Grain Rice
- 1 Cup Ground Beef
- 1 Kelp (3×2 Inch)
Beef Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Green Onion
- ½ Tbsp Cooking Wine (Optional)
- ½ Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 1 tsp Sesame Oil
- 2 Pinches Black Pepper
Sauce Ingredients
- 4 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 2 Tbsp Green Onion
- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 1 Tbsp Hot Pepper Powder
- ½ Tbsp Sugar
- ½ Tbsp Sesame Oil
- ½ Tbsp Sesame Seeds
Directions
Obtain about 6 cups of soybean sprouts (16oz). Wash them twice and remove any bad parts.
Combine 1 cup of ground beef with all of the ingredients for the beef: 1 Tbsp of soy sauce, 1 Tbsp of finely chopped green onion, ½ Tbsp of cooking wine (optional), ½ Tbsp of minced garlic, 1 tsp of sesame oil, and 2 pinches of black pepper.
Obtain one (3×2 inch) piece of kelp and rinse it with water once. The kelp helps the rice become more sticky and shiny. In addition, kelp is good for extra good flavor and nutrition for the food.
Wash one cup of short grain rice at least twice in cold water. You can soak the rice in water for about 10 minutes to get better texture.
Drain the rice and put the kelp on top of the rice. Pour some water on it. Add a slightly smaller amount of water to the rice than you normally would. That is because the bean sprouts will add some liquid as they cook.
Place the marinated beef on top of the rice and kelp. Spread the beef evenly so it will cook better.
Add the soybean sprouts on top of everything and cook it with the “white rice” setting. It will take about 45 minutes to an hour depending on your rice cooker.
Meanwhile, make the sauce for the rice. Mix together 4 Tbsp of soy sauce, 2 Tbsp of finely chopped green onion, 1 Tbsp of minced garlic, 1 Tbsp of hot pepper powder, ½ Tbsp of sugar, ½ Tbsp of sesame oil, and ½ Tbsp of sesame seeds.
Once the rice is done cooking, remove the kelp from the rice cooker and throw it away.
Move the cooked rice and bean sprouts to a bigger bowl to mix. Stir everything gently. If there are any large chunks of beef, break them into the smaller pieces.
When you serve the rice, place some of the mixture in a bowl and add some sauce on top of it. Mix the rice with the sauce before eating. You will not need other side dishes, but it will taste great with kimchi. Enjoy. 🙂

This looks delicious! I’m going to make this tomorrow. Could I add mushrooms? My neighbor just gave me a bag of fresh button mushrooms 😛
Aeri Lee says
hi Bo unni,
How are you? So happy to hear from you. hehe… I don’t know what kind of mushroom you have..but usually mushroms make a lot of liquid when they are cooked.. so it will not be good to cook them together with your rice..but.. just fry in the pan with a little bit of salt and pepper.. or whatever you cook … then.. when you mix the rice mixture with sauce..add some of your mushrooms too..and eat.. ^^ I hope you and your husband enjoy this recipe. thanks Miss you..

I miss you so much on facebook!! That’s one reason Maria S. made the Korean and Asian Food Lovers group on fb. You don’t know how much you are missed 😥 🙂 … BUT! we understand.
I will cook the mushrooms separately as you suggested (btw.. they’re button mushrooms)

lixin says
Hi, is it possible to make this recipe without using beef or any other meat? (; Thank you!
Aeri Lee says
hi lixin,
Yes you can skip the meat.. you might lose some flavor from the beef..but it will be still okay.
beebo says
hi,
I am wondering if you know how to make this.

thank you <3
Aeri Lee says
hi beebo,
I can guess what you want.. you want fried chicken with special sweet and salty (soy sauce) sauce… right. I will add it to my list. 🙂
Gee says
Would the recipe still be good if sea weed was used instead of kelp or without kelp ?. ❓
Aeri Lee says
hi Gee,
with kelp it will taste better but you can skip it.. it will be okay ^^
Yoonhee says
Hi. I’m confused. The written recipe says 2 cups uncooked rice, and the video says 1 cup uncooked rice. And then you also mention to use “less” water than you would normally use, but in the video you fill the water to line “3” for white rice. Am I just dumb and missing something? 😳 When I cook white rice in my rice cooker, if I have 2 cups uncooked rice, then I fill to line “2” for white rice. Please clarify for me! I really want to try this! Thanks 😛
Aeri Lee says
hi Yoonhee,
Sorry for confusion…. While I’m making videos…I complete recipes.. to write down the accurate amount for people.. that’s why sometimes there are some adjustment between the video you watch and my written recipes.. My answer is.. just trust written recipe and follow the steps.. written recipe is for 6 servings and the video is for 3 servings… use video as a guide.. thanks
Yoonhee says
Thanks for the clarification! 😛
Natalie says
I used the written recipe exactly how it was written (2 cups rice) and it came out half cooked and half uncooked. I used a rice cooker. And the bean sprouts smelled fishy too. I’m so sad T.T
Aeri Lee says
hi Natalie,
Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. So if you did exactly the same thing with this recipe.. the only difference will be.. the ricecooker.. I don’t know what kind of setting did you use for yours. I know you might not try it again.. but if you have any chance to try it again.. you can cook it longer. With the sauce and everything together.. the cooked bean sprout taste good.. again. I’m sorry that you wasted your time and effort..and food.. ㅜ.ㅜ
Natalie says
Yeah I think it’s my rice cooker too! I put it on Glutinous rice setting, but for some reason it only cooked for 20 minutes. Maybe it’s time for me to get a new one haha. Thanks Aeri! I feel a little better ^.^
Aeri Lee says
Hi Natalie,
Thank you for your reply. I feel better too. 🙂
Liza says
Hi Aeri 언니! Can I used beef that is diced? Or does it have to be ground beef? Thank you! *^^*
Aeri Lee says
if your beef is little pieces.. it will be better for flavor and texture than chunk.. so if your beef is diced as chunks..I recommend you chop them small pieces like ground beef with your knife.. thanks
karla says
You are awesome* 😀
