Today, I will show you how to make stir-fried spicy squid using Sempio’s hot chili hyangshin sauce. With a few simple steps and ingredients, you can make a great meal that is popular in Korean restaurants. I already posted a recipe for the homemade version before. Using Sempio‘s premade sauce makes it very easy and convenient to make at home while still tasting delicious. So I wanted to share this recipe with you. If you cannot get the sauce, you can try my homemade recipe. We are hosting a contest for Sempio’s hot chili hyangshin sauce this month (October 2012). So if you want to try the sauce for free, please visit my Sempio Youtube Channel, AerisKitchen4Sempio, and enter the contest . 🙂
Yield: 2-3 Servings
Short Korean Lesson
- HaeSanMul (해산물) = Seafood
- SiJang (시장) = Market
- 1 Pack Frozen Squid Rings (1 lb)
- 1 Cup Onion
- ½ Cup Green Onion
- 1 Tbsp Garlic, Sliced
- 1 Tbsp Red Hot Pepper
- 1 Tbsp Green Hot pepper
- 1 Tbsp Cooking Oil
- ¼ Cup Sempio Hot Chili Hyangshin Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Cornstarch (2 Tbsp Water)
- 1 Tbsp Hot Pepper Powder
- ½ Tbsp Sesame Seeds
Obtain 1 pack (1 lb) of frozen squid rings. Mine were ready to use for cooking, so that was very convenient. You can also use fresh squid.
Chop the onion (1 cup), green hot pepper (1 Tbsp), and red hot pepper (1 Tbsp) into ¼-inch pieces. Chop the green onions (½ cup) into ½-inch pieces. Slice the garlic (1 Tbsp) thinly.
Heat a pan with 1 Tbsp of cooking oil. Add the garlic and fry for 10 seconds on high.
Add the onion and frozen squid. You do not have to thaw the squid if it is frozen.
Add ¼ cup of Sempio’s hyangshin sauce. The sauce is very spicy, so take that into consideration. Shake the sauce bottle before using.
Sprinkle 1 Tbsp of hot pepper powder on top. Then fry for about 5 minutes on medium-high.
Mix 1 Tbsp of cornstarch into 2 Tbsp of water. Pour the mixture into the pan. Since I used frozen squid, without thawing it, it had more water in the pan. If you use fresh squid, you might get less water in your pan. Then add about ⅓ cup of water into the pan.
After that, add the green onion and hot peppers. Cook for 3 more minutes on medium-high, or until the sauce becomes thick.
When everything is done, turn off the heat and sprinkle ½ Tbsp of sesame seeds on top before serving.
Put some cooked rice on your plate and then pour some of this stir-fried squid on top. Serve it with kimchi and other Korean side dishes. Mix the rice, squid, and sauce together before eating. It is spicy, but very delicious. Enjoy!
