Today, I will show you a great way to pack a lunchbox for a family picnic using the bulgogi and ssamjang that I posted before. This three layer lunchbox is beautiful and will boost your appetite and give you a balanced meal with delicious flavors. It looks very fancy, but it is super easy to prepare, so it cannot get any better. 🙂 One layer is the bulgogi for the meat group. Rice, wrapped with lettuce and ssamjang (which is the seasoned soybean paste) gives you some grains and veggies. Lastly, the colorful rainbow fruit skewers makes for a nice and fresh dessert. Why don’t you make this fun and tasty lunchbox and go on a picnic with your loved ones in this spring? 🙂

Directions
Let’s start making the bulgogi layer. Marinate some bulgogi ahead of time and cook it right before packing the lunchbox. You can use my bulgogi recipe for this. I have 3 different versions of bulgogi that I posted so far, however, my recommendation for this particular bulgogi lunch box is my first bulgogi recipe. That is also my husband’s favorite bulgogi recipe.
When the bulgogi is done cooking, set it aside to cool down a bit before putting it in the lunchbox.
Put the cooked bulgogi in one layer of your lunchbox. To make it look fancier, place the bulgogi on top of 3-4 lettuce leaves. Sprinkle some finely chopped green onion and toasted sesame seeds on top. The first layer is done.
To make the second layer, start by washing and drying the leaves of a head of lettuce. If a leaf is too big, tear it in half. Put a golf ball-sized spoonful of cooked rice on the lettuce.
Gently wrap the leaf around the rice, but leave the top open. It’s very cute, isn’t it? It will be a good bite-sized food.
Put the lettuce wrapped rice in another layer of the lunchbox.
Get some ssamjang. I already posted a good recipe for it in my last post, so please check it out.
Put little bit of ssamjang on top of each ball of rice and then place a piece of thinly cut red hot pepper on top. It will give great color and add a good hit to the food. Another layer is done.
For the last layer, we will make rainbow fruit skewers. I prepared many different colors of fruits to make it more special, but you can use whatever fruit you have. I prepared 6 different colors fruits that can represent a rainbow’s colors. To make 6 skewers, you will need 6 bamboo skewers (6 inch), 3 medium-sized strawberries (or 6 small ones), ½ of an orange, 1 pineapple ring ( or 6 chunks), 2 kiwis, 12 blueberries, and 6 red grapes.
Cut the strawberries in half. Cut the orange, kiwi and pineapple into bite-sized chunks. Put each fruit on a skewer in this order: strawberry, orange, pineapple, kiwi, blueberry, and grape. Follow the same process for the rest.
Put the fruit skewers in the third layer. So, everything is done now. It is time to enjoy your lunchbox.
Depending on the serving sizes, you can double or triple this recipe. 🙂 Now, you can enjoy a bulgogi meal when you’re on a picnic. Please try this lunchbox and let me know how you like it. 🙂

Great video and recipes! Would you be able to tell me where you got your bento box with the individual lids? I’ve got a traditional one but it only has a lid for the top.
Thanks a bunch!

hi Carissa,

Thanks Aeri! I found something similar on amazon. People can look up “jubako” bento box. It’s pretty limited in selection though in terms of finding ones with inner lids. I also found more selection on rakuten global but shipping is quite expensive.
