Crown Daisy also called “SsukGat” (쑥갓) is a vegetable belonging to the Asteraceae family. It has a dark green color, deeply serrated shape, and a distinctive scent. It is widespread in Korea, China, and Japan. Yellow or white flowers bloom in early summer, but because of their strong scent, they are planted in flower pots or flower beds in Europe for ornamental purposes only and are not used for food as in Asia. These days, the caloric content is only 26 kcal per 100 g, and it is popular as it is known as an alkaline food that is easy to digest. Since it can be grown in a greenhouse, it can be eaten all year round.

■ Scientific Name: Chrysanthemum coronarium L.
■ Classification: Asteraceae
■ English Name: Crown Daisy
■ Korean Name: 쑥갓 (SsukGat)
■ Origin: Europe
■ Cultivation Condition :
ㅇ A fertile sandy soil with adequate humidity is good, and if the soil is dry, the growth is poor.
ㅇ Garland Chrysanthemum likes a cool climate, so 59-68˚F / 15-20˚C is the optimal temperature for growth, and it is strong against high temperatures, so it can be cultivated even in midsummer. In warm regions, winter cultivation is possible in the open field, but 50˚F/ 10˚C or higher is good, In winter, cold sand, plastic, etc. are used to protect against the frost.
■ Physiological Characteristics:
ㅇ As a one-year herb, it has strong resistance to heat, little damage from pests and diseases, and fast growth.
ㅇ Cold resistance is also relatively strong, so it grows up to 50˚F/10˚C, so it can be cultivated in winter only with cold protection facilities, so it can be grown all year round.
ㅇ Major varieties include large-leaved, mid-leaved, and small-leaved varieties.
ㅇ Addition due to high temperature and long days
■ Sowing and Planting Seedlings:
ㅇ Germination Temperature: 59-68˚F / 15-20˚C
ㅇ Seed Depth: ¼ – ½ “/ 0.6 cm – 1.2 cm
ㅇ Seed Spacing: 1- 2 ” / 2.5 cm – 5 cm
ㅇ Plant Spacing: 6 – 8 ” / 15 cm – 20 cm
ㅇ Row Distance: 14 – 20 ” / 36 cm – 50 cm
ㅇ Maturity Days: 40 Days
■ How to Grow:
❍ Making a Field and Planting Seeds
① Two weeks before sowing, put 100g/m2 of high earth lime and 2kg/m2 of compost for soil pH correction and plow the field. One week before sowing, add 60g/m2 of complex fertilizer.
② Use corrugated cardboard, etc. to make a trough, sow it, lightly cover it with soil, and then give it plenty of water. The optimum germination temperature of seeds is 59-68˚F / 15-20˚C, and it usually takes 3~5 days to germinate. Garland Chrysanthemum has a dormant period of about 2 months after seeding, so the germination rate is poor during that time.
❍ Water and Fertilizer Cycle
① Crown Daisy can become ill if it is humid (anthrax) or drying (downy mildew) continues, so pay attention to water management.
② Thinning is not done in particular, but thinning is performed lightly once in addition to weeding.
③ Fertilize once every day for 1~2 leaves, 2 times for 5~6 leaves every day. Fertilizer (N:P: K=8:8:8) is given about 40-50g per square meter. (The main leaf – all the leaves that appear after the cotyledon, and the cotyledon – the first leaf that emerges after the seed germinates)
■ Harvest:
❍ Harvest 30 to 50 days after sowing.
❍ Harvest when the plant height is about 4-6″/10-15 cm with 5-10 leaves.
❍ Harvest in spring and summer in the evening to prevent counterfeiting and insulates in winter so that the leaves do not freeze.
❍ In the case of winter cultivation in warm regions, the seeds are rarely sown and harvested once in the fall. It can then be allowed to grow its side branches during the winter so that the last harvest can be obtained from the side branches in the spring.
■ Nutritional Value :
Crown Daisy is rich in beta-carotene, iron, calcium, potassium, dietary fiber, and many other physiologically active substances.
It is also known to have the effect of reducing phlegm and protecting the intestines and stomach.
■ Use:
Salad, Side-dishes, Jeon, To Wrap with Korean B.B.Q, Garnish, Soup, Etc.
