Most Korean soups need dried anchovies to make broth. If somebody doesn’t like strong anchovy flavor, like me, you can use this instead of real anchovies. It looks like a tea bag, but in the bag is dried anchovy powder. When you make broth with it, you can taste that it is milder than real anchovies. It is also convenient to use, because it is individually wrapped, and easy to remove from your broth after boiling.

Hi!
Please tell me how many of the regular dried anchovies should I substitute for 1 dried anchovy pack when I make soup broth? Thank you!
hi Kieu,
It will be depending on your dried anchovy size and depending on the recipe..but usually I will say.. 1 pack can be replace with 6 to 7 medium sized dried anchovies…. or 3-4 big size anchovies for soup…

Hi Aeri!
I was wondering, can we make tteokboki without the anchovy and fish cakes?
Kamsa Hamnida! 🙂
hi Anita,
You can .. just you some good flavor.. you can skip anchovy..but at least use fish cake if you can.. ^^
Hello!
I was wondering – what is fishcake? I’ve seen it but what does it taste like? Is it a strong fish taste? It looks more like a bread than fish. I don’t like fish too much but I want to make an authentic ddeokbokki! Thank you 🙂
Hi Alexei,
I found a link about fish cake for you.

Even you don’t like fish much, you might like fish cake.. try it someday.

In my grocery store, the anchovies powder are unpacked in a pouch like that. So how many tablespoons of anchovies powder are in one pack?

Dear Elly,
Where did you purchase your anchovy packs? I can’t find them anywhere 🙁
Your help is much appreciated.
hi Dayeun,
I don’t know where you live in..however I got it in a Korean grocery store in USA..
Aeri 님,
안녕하세요!
I have looked everywhere for this anchovy pack and I’m having a really hard time. I’ve called numerous Hmart locations and it seems that they don’t carry them. I’ve tried smaller Korean grocery stores also. Can you please advise which korean supermarket carried these anchovy packs? It would be very helpful.
감사합니다.
hi Dayeun,
The korean market I go is very small one.. if Hmart doesn’t have it.. hmm.. You can use medium or large size anchovies for making broth too.
Hi!
I don’t mind using dried anchovies, but when I went to the korean grocer I saw there were different sizes of anchovies: small, medium, large. Which ones would be the most suitable for making su je bi?
Thank you 🙂
hi Clara Quan,
Small.. medium size are for making side-dishes… and large one is usually for making broth. ^^
Aeri:
Thanks very much for this valuable information. At least I now know what it’s called in Korean.
What I’m looking for is a large quantity of the plain anchovy powder. Is there an exact Korean name for this? If you provide me the name in both English and Korean alphabets, I can both pronounce it AND show it to the retailer and perhaps they can make more sense of what I’m looking for.
Thanks

If I’ve got this right, the powder is called myulchi garu (멸치 가루). Is this correct?
Thanks
Josh
hi Josh Korn,
I think you are right.. if you use myulchi garu instead of dried anchovy pack or dried anchovy.. becareful not to use too much.. because the powder can give too strong flavor to your dish with small amount since you will not discard it… Thanks
Love love love your video`s. Is any web side that i can buy this ?
hi Ilyana,
Thanks for your comment. I tried to find a website for you, but i couldn’t. I bought it at a Korean grocery store ..offline. Sorry for poor answer.
HI! I have recently purchased the anchovy flavour soup stock tea bags. The bag however is entirely in Korean and I have no idea how much water to use per tea bag to make the anchovy stock. : ) Can you advise? Also, do i simmer or boil it and for how long? Sorry for the number of questions. THANK YOU!!
hi Holly A.
If you take a picture of your product and send it to me, I can give you more accurate answer for it. Do you have a package for instruction? Anyway, I will guess, you can use one pack for one pot soup (up to 5-6 servings). To make broth, you usually add the anchovy pack from the beginning and once the water starts to boil, I usually use for several minutes.. it’s depends on how strong you want the flavor in it.. so it can be about 5-10 minutes.. or even longer.. Hope this helps .. thanks
