Today, I will share with you one of the hottest trends in Korea around instant noodles. It was popularized in part by the TV show “Dad! Where Are You Going?” (아빠 어디가). In it, one father made kids some instant noodles which they loved. Many people who watched the little boy enjoying them were drooling. LOL… If you watched that episode, you might have wanted to try them too, like me. So, here is a recipe for it. The name is fun too – jjapaguri. It is made by combining the names of two different types of instant noodles. “jjapa” comes from “jjapagetti” (black bean noodles) and “guri” from “neoguri” (spicy instant noodles). Combining two different kinds of instant noodles makes a new delicious flavor. One is a non spicy black bean noodle pack and the other one is a very spicy noodle pack. This concept has become so popular in Korea that the Korean instant noodle companies are advertising and bundling them together. Try this someday.

Quinoa Jeon

A few weeks ago, my husband cooked quinoa. It was the first time that either of us tried it. We wondered what this healthy, but curious, grain would be like. For those who don’t know, quinoa is one of the few plants that is a source of complete protein. The flavor and texture were much better than we expected. We both liked it. We ate it with tilapia fried in hot sauce and olive oil. It was a great match. Anyway, he made quinoa than we could eat for that meal, so I came up with the idea of making jeon with the leftovers. This is my recipe using it. It was a big hit with my husband. I grabbed different things I had on hand to make a Korean-style jeon. Instead of using wheat flour, I used quinoa. Not only does it give good flavor, but it also has a unique texture that normal flour doesn’t have. This can be great for people who cannot eat wheat. It is healthy and very delicious. Try it someday. 🙂

Strawberry SaTang

Today I will make another popular Korean street food using fresh strawberries. It is called “strawberry hard candy,” or “딸기 사탕 (DdalGi SaTang)” in Korean. All you need to do is simply melt white sugar and cover the strawberries with it. It can make great and unique party or snack food. In Korea, these are skewered like a kebab. I will show you an easier way to make it at home rather than the typical way you see it as street food.

Tuna KimBap

Today I will show you how to make tuna kimbap called “참치 김밥” in Korean. I already posted common kimbap and beef kimbap before. So if you are interested in them, please check them out. There are many similarities between different kinds of kimbap, with the ingredients only being slightly different. In this recipe, the unique flavor of perilla leaves combines well with the tuna and other ingredients. Try this delicious kimbap someday.

Garlic Stem BokkEum

Hi Everyone! Today, I will make one of my favorite Korean side dishes using garlic stems. It is stir-fried garlic stems, called maneuljjong bbokkeum (마늘쫑 볶음) in Korean. Mild garlic flavor from the garlic stems with a sweet and savory flavor makes a great side-dish. The soft and chewy texture makes it even better. Try this delicious dish when you have access to garlic stems in the oriental grocery store.

Nutritious JjinBbang

Some people sometimes ask me what kind of snack food I feed my son. My husband and I want to feed him healthy food, but it can be challenging to feed kids nutritious food. Kids like colorful and uniquely shaped food. Today, I will share one recipe that my son loves. It is called “nutritious steamed bread,” or “영양 찐빵,” in Korean. It is very colorful, pretty, and more importantly, delicious. It is a great way to introduce the taste of vegetables such as carrots and peas to your kids. My son, Bryson, is not a big fan of carrot or peas. However, when he tried the bread, he said “Hmm! This is good carrot. This is good pea.” … lol … You can also have fun making this colorful steamed bread with your kids. They will remember the precious memory with you. Of course, it can be a good dessert or snack food for adult too. 😉 Try it someday. 🙂

Bok Choy Salad

Hi Everyone! Today, I want to introduce you to one of my favorite foods that my sister-in-law makes: bok choy salad. I don’t know why I like it so much. Maybe it’s because of the ingredients: soy sauce, vinegar, green onion, sesame oil, or something else. It has an Asian flavor to it. My sister-in-law uses balsamic vinegar; however, for this recipe, I will use Sempio’s drinking black rice vinegar. The result was even better using the drinking vinegar. Try it someday.

Tilapia with a Korean Style Sauce

Living abroad sometimes gives you challenges in life – especially when it comes to cooking. If you get hungry for a certain food, but cannot get the right ingredients for it, substitutes will just have to make do. Today, I will introduce one of my substitutes. In Korea, people eat a steamed dried fish that has a special sauce topping during big holidays such as Lunar New Year (Seolnal) or Thanksgiving (Chuseok). The dish is rather simple, especially for a holiday food. When I say “dried fish,” you might imagine a dried fish filet or a bag of shredded dried fish. However, in this case, it is a whole dried fish minus the head and guts. I could not get that here so I tried to make that dish with frozen tilapia fillets, which are easily found in these parts of the world. I’m happy to share my successful experiment with you. I love the way it turned out, especially the texture of the fish and the delicious sauce on top. Try it someday. 🙂

Korean Style Baby Meatballs

Many people asked me what kind of food I feed our son. Thankfully, our son Bryson eats well. He seems to like both Korean and American food. Today, I will share one recipe that my son loves: Korean style baby meatballs. They are made by simply grinding all the ingredients together in a mixer and frying them. These can be good for a snack, appetizer, or main dish. They are very tender and delicious meatballs.
