JuMeokBap (주먹밥) can be translated as “fist bap,” or “fist rice.” The reason why it has that funny name is that this ball shaped rice looks like the shape of a fist. In the old days, when Korean people had to prepare simple and easy meals for the soldiers in the Korean war, this food was a great idea because it is easy to make and easy to take anywhere to eat. Later, it was also popular for people to take to their work place or school. Nowadays, there is a variety of “fist rice” dishes with differences in the ingredients such as beef, kimchi, seafood, tuna, dried anchovies, etc. Also, the size has became smaller and it has become more colorful, pretty, and flavorful. When you do not have much to eat, just mix some rice with a few other ingredients to make “fist rice,” and eat it as a meal. It would be very good in your lunch box with a few other side dishes and fruits. Enjoy!

Andong is the name of a Korean city, and this special dish is a very famous food from that area. It is also popular with many people that visit Korea. The braised chicken and vegetables with the sauce will make you fall in love with the flavor. I love, love, love this food. It is not too difficult to make from scratch, but if you have access to Sempio’s Braised Chicken Sauce, you can take a shortcut and follow my recipe using Sempio’s sauce instead. Both are delicious. Many people wanted me to make this dish from scratch, so here it is.

In Korea, there are many rest stops along the major highways. The best thing about Korean rest stops is the different kinds of snack foods to try. Rest Stop Gamja is one of the popular rest stop foods. With less than five ingredients, you can make this delicious snack. Potatoes fried in butter with just the right amount of saltiness will make your mouth very happy. Try this someday. 😉

Spicy salted seaweed stem bokkeum is another delicious way to eat seaweed stems. I’ve posted non-spicy seaweed stem bokkeum before. Once you make this, you can serve it for several weeks as a side dish. For this recipe, I used Sempio Youndoo for flavoring. If you don’t have Youndoo, you can add a little bit of salt and/or soy sauce depending on your tastes. The slightly spicy and garlicky flavor makes this seaweed stem dish very tasty. Try it someday. 🙂

Custard is very easy to make. Sometimes I will add fruit, but you have to make sure there is not a lot of juice in the fruit. Custard is good while still warm or when chilled in the refrigerator.

Sweet Rice Drink is one of the most common and popular traditional holiday drinks in Korea. There are not many ingredients in it; however, it takes long time to make. That is why it is a special drink for holidays. 🙂 It tastes a little like iced tea, but it has a unique barley and rice flavor. It is my favorite Korean drink. 🙂 Lunar new year is coming soon, so try this cool and sweet Korean drink for that special day. 🙂 Now I get to say, “Happy New Year” again! 🙂

Malted barley powder is often used for the Korean sweet rice drink called “sikhye.” You can find it in a Korean or Asian grocery store. The malted barley from mills in Korea is usually of high quality. There is a chunky type of malted barley powder as pictured in this post, and there is also a fine powdered type that is a litte more convenient to use.

Sempio braised chicken is a very easy, shortcut version of Andong JjimDak. When I tried this product for the first time, I thought that the taste is almost the same as authentic homemade sauce. So, I am very happy to share this recipe with you. Andong is a name of a Korean city, and this special dish is a very famous food from that area. The braised chicken and vegetables with the sauce will make you fall in love with the flavor. I love, love, love this food. It is not too difficult to make from scratch, however, it is even easier to make if you have an already prepared sauce like the Sempio sauce that I used for this recipe. I know that there will be many people who can not buy this product where they live, so someday soon, I will post an Andong jjimdak recipe using homemade sauce.
